Introduction to Tungsten Carbide Rods

Classification:


  • Tungsten carbide rods are high-performance cylindrical components made from cemented carbide, primarily composed of tungsten carbide (WC) particles bonded with a metal binder such as cobalt (Co) or nickel (Ni). These rods are widely used as raw materials for cutting tools, particularly in drilling, milling, reaming, and end milling applications, due to their exceptional hardness, strength, and wear resistance.

    Material Characteristics

    Tungsten carbide rods offer a combination of advanced properties:

    • Very high hardness (HRA 89–93)

    • Excellent wear and abrasion resistance

    • High transverse rupture strength (TRS)

    • Good heat and corrosion resistance

    • Stable performance at high temperatures

    Different grades are available depending on the WC grain size, cobalt content, and application requirements—for example, fine-grain grades for high wear resistance, and coarse-grain grades for impact toughness.

    Carbide rods are available in various forms, including:

    • Unground rods (as-sintered surface)

    • Ground rods (precision-ground to h6 or better tolerance)

    • With or without coolant holes (for internal cooling during machining)
