Titanium-Zirconium-Molybdenum Alloy

Titanium-Zirconium-Molybdenum alloy, commonly referred to as TZM, is a high-performance molybdenum-based alloy containing small amounts of titanium (typically 0.5%), zirconium (about 0.08%), and carbon (around 0.02% to 0.03%). These alloying elements are carefully added to improve the mechanical properties and high-temperature performance of molybdenum, making TZM one of the most widely used high-temperature molybdenum alloys.

  • Key Properties

    • High Recrystallization Temperature: TZM has a recrystallization temperature around 1400–1500°C, significantly higher than pure molybdenum. This allows it to maintain mechanical strength at elevated temperatures.
    • Excellent Creep Resistance: The alloy exhibits outstanding resistance to creep deformation under prolonged high-temperature conditions.
    • High Strength and Hardness: TZM has greater tensile strength and hardness compared to pure molybdenum, especially at temperatures above 1000°C.
    • Improved Ductility and Toughness: The fine dispersion of carbides (mainly TiC and ZrC) enhances toughness and prevents grain growth at high temperatures.
    • Good Machinability: While harder than pure molybdenum, TZM can still be machined using conventional methods with appropriate tooling.
