Key Properties
- High Melting Point: Mo-Re alloys retain the high melting point characteristic of molybdenum (melting point above 2600°C), making them ideal for extreme-temperature applications.
- Enhanced Ductility and Toughness: Rhenium improves the ductility of molybdenum, reducing its brittleness at both room and elevated temperatures. This makes Mo-Re alloys easier to fabricate and less prone to cracking.
- Excellent High-Temperature Strength: Mo-Re alloys maintain their mechanical strength and structural stability at temperatures exceeding 1500°C.
- Superior Creep Resistance: They exhibit excellent resistance to deformation under prolonged high-temperature stress.
- Good Corrosion and Oxidation Resistance: Especially suitable for vacuum and controlled atmospheres; rhenium addition enhances resistance to corrosion in aggressive environments.
- Outstanding Weldability: Mo-Re alloys can be welded and fabricated more easily than pure molybdenum.
Common Grades and Compositions
-
Mo-5Re (5% Rhenium)
Offers improved ductility over pure molybdenum; typically used in furnace components and structural parts. -
Mo-41Re and Mo-47.5Re (41% and 47.5% Rhenium)
Provide superior strength and ductility; commonly used in aerospace, nuclear, and thermoelectric applications.
Typical Applications
- Aerospace Industry: Rocket nozzles, propulsion system components, and heat shields where high strength and thermal stability are critical.
- Thermocouples: Mo-Re alloys are widely used for Type C and Type D thermocouples due to their reliable thermoelectric properties at extremely high temperatures (up to 2300°C in inert atmospheres).
- Medical Industry: Components for X-ray equipment and medical imaging devices requiring precision and stability.
- Nuclear Industry: Reactor components and fuel cladding due to excellent high-temperature and radiation resistance.
- High-Temperature Furnaces: Heating elements, crucibles, and structural supports in vacuum and inert gas furnaces.
Advantages over Pure Molybdenum
- Improved ductility and formability.
- Higher tensile strength and toughness at elevated temperatures.
- Better weldability.
- Increased creep resistance and corrosion resistance.
Summary
Molybdenum-Rhenium alloys combine the high melting point and strength of molybdenum with the ductility, toughness, and corrosion resistance imparted by rhenium. These alloys are ideally suited for demanding applications in aerospace, nuclear power, electronics, and high-temperature industrial processes.
