Niobium is a corrosion-resistant, high-melting-point metal that plays a valuable role in the nuclear industry, particularly in the construction of specialized components within nuclear reactors. Thanks to its excellent resistance to neutron irradiation, good mechanical strength at elevated temperatures, and compatibility with other reactor materials, niobium is well-suited for use in demanding reactor environments.
Niobium is often used in the following nuclear reactor components:

Alloying element in zirconium-niobium (Zr-Nb) alloys, commonly used in pressurized water reactors (PWRs) for fuel rod cladding due to their low neutron absorption cross-section and excellent corrosion resistance in hot water and steam

Superconducting materials in fusion reactor magnets when alloyed with titanium (Nb-Ti)
One of niobium’s most important advantages in nuclear applications is its low neutron capture cross-section, which minimizes interference with the fission process and helps maintain reactor efficiency. In addition, its strong resistance to hydrogen embrittlement and oxidation makes it suitable for long-term service in extreme environments.
Although niobium is not used in bulk for core components due to cost and fabrication complexity, its use in critical areas where performance and radiation tolerance are essential makes it an important material in both current and next-generation nuclear technologies.
