  • Molybdenum (Mo) is a refractory metal widely used in the manufacturing of components for high-temperature furnaces due to its excellent thermal and mechanical properties. With a melting point of 2623°C, low vapor pressure, and outstanding dimensional stability at elevated temperatures, molybdenum is ideal for applications that require durability and performance in extreme heat.

    Common molybdenum furnace components include:

    • Heating elements: Molybdenum wires, rods, or strips used as resistive heating sources in vacuum or inert gas atmospheres.

    • Heat shields and insulation screens: To minimize heat loss and improve thermal efficiency.

    • Support structures and racks: For holding samples or workpieces during high-temperature processes.

    • Crucibles and trays: Used to contain materials during sintering, annealing, or crystal growth.

    Molybdenum is especially favored in vacuum furnaces, hydrogen furnaces, and inert atmosphere furnaces, where conventional metals would rapidly oxidize or deform. In these environments, molybdenum maintains its strength and resists contamination, ensuring reliable and consistent performance.

    To enhance its performance and oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures, molybdenum components are often coated with protective layers such as silicon dioxide (SiO₂) or aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) when used in slightly oxidizing atmospheres.

    Due to its reliability, thermal efficiency, and long service life, molybdenum continues to be a material of choice for advanced industrial furnaces used in metal processing, ceramics, electronics, and aerospace industries.
