90W-Ni-Cu parts

90W-Ni-Cu (90% tungsten, with nickel and copper as the binder phase) is a tungsten heavy alloy (WHA) that offers an excellent combination of high density, strength, and corrosion resistance while maintaining good machinability. Unlike tungsten-copper (W-Cu) alloys, which prioritize electrical and thermal conductivity, W-Ni-Cu alloys are designed for structural applications that require high mass, excellent mechanical properties, and non-magnetic characteristics.

Classification:

  • Key Properties

    1. High Density (≈17 g/cm³ - 18 g/cm³) Provides excellent mass and weight concentration, making it ideal for counterweights and radiation shielding.

    2. Superior Strength & Hardness – The tungsten matrix ensures high mechanical strength, wear resistance, and durability under heavy loads.

    3. Good Corrosion Resistance – Compared to tungsten-nickel-iron (W-Ni-Fe) alloys, W-Ni-Cu exhibits superior corrosion resistance, especially in marine and chemical environments.

    4. Non-Magnetic Behavior – Unlike W-Ni-Fe, this alloy is non-magnetic, making it suitable for applications where magnetism must be avoided.

    5. Moderate Electrical & Thermal Conductivity – While not as conductive as tungsten-copper, it still provides sufficient thermal dissipation for some high-performance applications.

    6. Good Machinability – The addition of nickel and copper improves the material’s workability, allowing for precision machining and shaping.

    Applications

    • Aerospace & Defense – Used in counterweights, gyroscopes, and kinetic energy penetrators.

    • Radiation ShieldingIdeal for X-ray and gamma-ray shielding in medical and industrial applications.

    • Balancing Weights – Applied in automotive, aircraft, and sports equipment to achieve precise weight distribution.

    • Marine & Chemical Industry Components – Suitable for environments where corrosion resistance is critical.

    • Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) Electrodes – Offers moderate conductivity and durability for specialized machining applications.
